Lean ethics: doing good work on ethically complex projects

Baltimore A

The more substantial the real world outcomes of a product, the more important it is to have thoughtful a designer. So, it’s crucial to have ethically-focused designers working in spaces they perceive to be ethically complex. I came to this realization after starting to work with military clients despite having reservations about contemporary military actions. A lean approach to product design can inform an ethical approach that seeks to improve real world outcomes immediately and iteratively. I will discuss my journey towards this conclusion, a framework for thinking about working on ethically complex problems of all types, and tactics for working on these types of products while driving towards better ethical outcomes.
